Archives For Indonesia

by ACCA student blogger Adhitya Fadriansyah

One year ago, I assisted my employer to become one of the first ACCA platinum approved employers in Indonesia. While it is usually initiated by the employer, we as the students can in fact contribute to the process. In this article I would like to share the benefits the can be gained from it, as well as the process required.

Why? What’s the benefit?

For the student, we can get the ACCA qualification faster by applying for the Performance objective exemption. This does not mean that you did not need to complete the performance objective – it is only a faster track to obtain membership by removing record keeping effort to demonstrate that we have met the minimum requirement. Bear in mind however that this is at your employer’s discretion.

For the employer, the approved employer program means that your company will gain a formal recognition complying with global standard and exclusive branding without any cost at all. ACCA approved employers can also get various discounts from ACCA as well as timely news and developments within the accounting profession.

How. What is the process?

First, make sure you get support from your local management and assess whether your employer fulfils ACCA’s rigorous standard. You can contact your supervisor / manager / finance leadership team or human resources department within your organization to get concurrence to proceed. You may also need to talk to your local ACCA representative to know whether your organization is eligible to apply for the approved employer program.

Once you have support and alignment with your local management and ACCA representative, the process is very straightforward. Your employer will need to apply online or complete a form containing background information about your company. Once it has been submitted, the ACCA representative will start the corroboration process, either through an interview or via email. After that, your employer will receive a notification on the outcome of the request via email.

The approved employer status will be valid for three years. After three years, ACCA will need to reconfirm that the details for your organization are still valid.

What are you waiting for?

Are you nearing the completion of your ACCA program? Does your company support your study? Have you completed the Practical Experience Requirement established by ACCA? If the answer to all these questions is yes; I would suggest you begin to discuss with your management and to engage your local ACCA representative now, to start the process. From what I can see, it is a three way win-win-win situation for all – you, your company and for ACCA as well.

Further information on the approved employer program can be found on this page.

I’m not a perfect person/
There’s many things I wish I didn’t do/
ut I continue learning…”

These lyrics really strike a chord with me and did so especially when I received my June exam results. I passed F8, but failed my first attempt at P1. Soon after, the frustration of failing one exam haunted me. But by thinking about the following sources of motivation in my life, I kept this feeling at bay.

Don’t forget the support your loved ones – parents, spouse, children, siblings or other relatives – give you, the valuable weekend time you spend reading ACCA books and preparing for exams, or perhaps the exam fees paid by your parents. Keep in mind how you will repay your family once you have completed the qualification – not in terms of goods/materials, but in terms of happiness and security.

For me, pursuing the ACCA Qualification while working proved to be helpful to my career. It provides me with the knowledge to challenge the status quo and seek improvements in my workplace. It is the journey, as well as the ACCA member title, which will help shape your future career. Enjoy the ride to the top, however rough it may be, as it is not – and will never be – an easy ride.

Reflecting on my past failure, I can see it was mostly due to lack of preparation. Finding a study partner helped me become organised and kept me on track with my study plan. I am lucky to have friends at my office also pursuing the ACCA Qualification that I can study with. Reading and writing in the ACCA student blog also helps me to keep motivated, since I know I am not alone.

Other goals

Other than those mentioned above, there are still lots of reasons for you to complete your ACCA Qualification; the opportunity of having your skills and knowledge recognised globally by employers and excellent financial reward are just a couple of examples of these. It’s up to you to decide what will motivate you the most.

I’ve found a reason for me/
To change who I used to be/
A reason to start over new/
And the reason is …

The Reason – Hoobastank

Have you asked yourself why you decided to pursue the ACCA Qualification? If not, perhaps it’s time for you to fill in the blank above.

Over 162,000 ACCA members have obtained the ACCA Qualification. If they can complete it, what’s stopping us?

Hallo everyone! My name is Adhitya Fadriansyah, I am a 26-year-old Indonesian married to a beautiful woman and blessed with a 21-month-old son. I am currently pursuing the ACCA Qualification while working as an Offshore Investment Appraisal Analyst at ConocoPhillips Indonesia. Futsal and football are my favourite sports and I am a big fan of Juventus Football club. During my leisure time, I love to play games and keep up to date with the latest developments in technology/gadgets.

My parents have been persuading me to pursue accounting as a career path since I was in elementary school. Even in my elementary school year book I wrote that my goal is to become an accountant – even though I did not know what accounting really was at that time, to be honest! :) Later on I understood how important the role of accountant is to the well being of a company, not only for record keeping but also for providing valuable information to the decision makers, to help the company achieve its strategic objectives.

Although I was influenced by my parents to pursue an accounting degree, I made the decision to pursue ACCA myself. I chose ACCA because it is a globally-recognised professional qualification. I believe ACCA will give me the strong foundations I need to compete in a competitive global market.

I have always dreamed of obtaining international experience and becoming a global citizen, being able to help others and develop my nation – as well as the accounting profession. In the end, I would like to make my elementary school year book goal come true – by becoming a full-fledged accountant. As Walt Disney once said, ‘All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.’
